Millions of patients will soon access NHS services closer to home as the government launches its ambitious 10 Year Health Plan. This major reform shifts care from hospital settings to neighbourhood-based health centres, aiming to improve convenience and reduce waiting times.
Key highlights:
- Neighbourhood health services will roll out nationwide, offering diagnostics, rehabilitation, mental health, nursing, and more—right on people’s doorsteps.
- New centres will house various services under one roof, open late and on weekends for easy access.
- The plan focuses on freeing up hospitals for the most acute cases, while community teams of nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and social care workers deliver preventative and everyday care locally.
- Over 4 million additional appointments, 1,900+ new GPs, and the lowest waiting lists in 2 years have been achieved so far.
- Emphasis on digital innovation will make appointment-booking and consultations simpler and faster.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the NHS was “in crisis” but promised this “reform or die” plan will put care on patients’ doorsteps and strengthen community health resources for the future.
Neighbourhood health centres are expected to help reduce pressure on hospitals and improve access for everyone, with local partnerships for both physical and mental health, plus social support services like debt or employment advice.
“Our 10 Year Health Plan will fundamentally rewire and future-proof our NHS so that it puts care on people’s doorsteps, harnesses game-changing tech and prevents illness in the first place.” – Prime Minister Keir Starmer
